Description
10/14/26 - This is an original "Red 9" Mauser C96 Broomhandle from WWI. Unlike its commercial counterparts, "Red 9" Broomhandles were chambered in the 9mm Para caliber used by the German Army and were marked with a large 9 on the grips, filled with red paint, to help soldiers tell them apart from the standard .30 Mauser guns. Only about 130,000 of these very collectible pistols were made, with only about 100,000 accepted by the army and issued to the troops. Considered a substitute for a light carbine, they became very popular in trench warfare. This one is all matching, double crown "U" proofed with an Imperial military acceptance proof on the right side of the receiver, and fitted with its original matching-numbered "Red 9" grips. There is a "1920" government property marking on the left side of the receiver, indicating it remained in government service after WWI, likely for issue to the Weimar-era police. It has retained about 85% of its original finish. The majority of the wear is along both sides of the barrel and around the high edges in general, where there are also some areas of light spotty oxidation. 7.5/10 bore with good rifling and light frosting throughout.
