Description
10/27/26 - This is a scarce Steyr M1912 that was part of a contract order by the Romanian military, dated 1913. The Steyr M1912, often called the "Steyr Hahn" (Steyr Hammer) for its exposed hammer, was made by Österreichische Waffenfabrik in Steyr, Austria. It fires the powerful 9mm Steyr (9x23mm) cartridge from an 8-round internal magazine loaded with stripper clips. Before Austria-Hungary formally adopted it in 1914, export contracts with Chile and Romania kept the production line running. Romania's pistols were delivered in 1913 and 1914 and are identified by the Romanian crown over "Md. 1912" on the slide. Many Romanian-contract pistols later had these markings ground off, so examples like this one with the crest still intact are especially desirable. The frame and slide are matching (serial 775a), but the barrel is numbered 7513. It has the proper Romanian crest and "Md. 1912" marking on the slide. The original finish rates roughly 70%, with the majority of the finish loss on the grip straps; there is also finish loss, spotty discoloration and pin-pricking on the underside of the frame, and some spots on the left front of the slide. Fitted with period-correct wood grips. The bore rates 5/10 with pretty good rifling, but there is noticeable pitting throughout.
