1/9/26- For sale is a very rare WWI era mud cover for the Gewehr 98 rifle. This pattern of mud cover was introduced later in the war, likely in 1917, to prevent jams and cleaning hassles from the muddy conditions of the trenches. Not many were issued before the war ended and mud covers were no longer needed after the end of trench warfare conditions, making these covers very rare. The cover shows some signs of exterior polishing and loss of bluing but the metal is intact with no deep scrapes or noticeable rust. The small bar for holding the bolt in place is fully functional and the cover has been tested and fits perfectly on a standard G98 rifle. Overall in very good condition.
