Description
11/3/26 - For sale is a US Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber with its iron scabbard. Patterned after the French Model 1822 saber, the Model 1840 was the standard US dragoon and cavalry saber from the Mexican War into the Civil War, where it saw heavy use until it was gradually replaced by the lighter Model 1860. Its heavy, wide blade earned it the nickname "Old Wristbreaker" among the troopers who carried it. This saber has the classic three-branch brass guard, a Phrygian helmet-style brass pommel, and a leather-wrapped grip bound with twisted brass wire. The wide, flat-backed curved blade measures about 1-1/4 inches wide at the guard and has a broad fuller running most of its length. The iron scabbard has both of its ring mounts and the drag at the tip. There are no visible maker or date markings. The saber is in fair condition overall. The blade shows obvious heavy spotty patina and discoloration throughout. The brass guard and pommel have an aged patina, and the leather grip and wire wrap are intact. The small leather washer at the base of the guard is cracked with a piece missing. The scabbard shows an even brown patina consistent with age. An honest, untouched example of the famous "Wristbreaker."
