Description
4/30/26- For sale is a Rock Island Arsenal (R.I.A.) 1903-dated U.S. Model 1896 .38 caliber double-action Army revolver holster, representing the Fourth Type, First Pattern “butt-forward” design and one of the earliest examples from the Army’s transition to regulation russet brown leather. This first-year production piece is exceptionally well-preserved, with all four key markings remaining crisp and fully legible, including the “ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL” stamp with 1903 date on the reverse belt loop, inspector mark “T.C.,” and leather worker initials “M.N.H.” stamped on the flap. The holster retains its full structure with tight stitching, intact seams, and all original components present and functional, including the toe plug and tie-down ring. The leather is in outstanding condition, maintaining a smooth surface and attractive light caramel tone with no crazing or flaking, reflecting careful preservation over time. Included is a scarce Rock Island Arsenal Model 1902 adapter dated 1904, designed for M1878 canteens to allow compatibility with newer belt systems. A superb and highly collectible early russet transition holster in exceptional original condition.
