Description
11/3/26 - Offered here is a WWI US M1917 helmet, the American version of the British Brodie "doughboy" helmet worn by US troops in France. This shell has been repainted at some point with a gold or silver colored paint over the original finish. Painted helmets like this were often used for veterans' parades and memorial events after the war. The original leather chinstrap is still attached. The condition is fair overall. The later paint has flaked away in many spots across the shell, showing the original dark finish underneath, and there are faint traces of red paint on one side. The rim shows wear and paint loss. The inside has also been painted, and the liner is no longer present, with only the crown pad remaining. The leather chinstrap shows wear and surface cracking but remains intact. A nice WWI helmet with an interesting later history.
