Description
11/4/26 - Offered here is a World War II era American Women's Voluntary Services (AWVS) uniform grouping consisting of the blue-gray four-pocket jacket, matching divided skirt, garrison cap and shoulder bag. Founded in January 1940 by Alice Throckmorton McLean, the AWVS was a civilian volunteer organization whose members drove ambulances, staffed canteens, sold war bonds, taught first aid and assisted with civil defense across the home front during the war. The shoulder bag features a zippered front pocket above the embroidered AWVS insignia, a white eagle over a blue-bordered patch reading AMERICAN WOMEN'S VOLUNTARY SERVICES in red and white lettering. The garrison cap shows several moth holes and light staining, and the bag shows some light spotting. A nice WWII AWVS uniform set honoring the women who served on the home front.
