Description

2/13/24 - This is a J.M. Cooper Navy Double Action Percussion Revolver, likely manufactured between 1864-1865 for use in the Civil War, as indicated by the early serial number (#2141 out of a total production of 15,000). The Cooper Revolvers were designed to be aesthetically similar to the Colt models 1849 and 1861 pocket Navy revolvers, but with the distinctive advantage of having both a double and single action trigger. The double action capability enabled the Cooper to be fired far more rapidly than the Colts, which required the hammer to be cocked every time they were fired. Other improvements over those Colt revolvers included a replaceable recoil shield, which contained a challenge for the hammer that minimized cap jams, and a cut-out on the right side of the frame for spent cap fragments to more easily fall off the cylinder nipples. The cylinder also contains deep notches cut in the rear to allow the hammer to rest between cylinder nipples and the hammer to rest between chambers, and thus enable the user to safely carry a fully loaded weapon. This was a far more secure system than other revolvers of the era. This .36 caliber example is all matching, with the serial number stamped on all major parts including the cylinder, underside of barrel, loading lever, frame, cylinder arbor, butt, and grip panels. The weapon is in good condition for its age, but does show signs of wear throughout, including minor pitting and oxidation, and the bore is weathered with worn rifling. The revolver is in excellent mechanical shape, which is exceptionally rare. Fully functional, with a crisp single action break, and a surprisingly smooth double action pull. Solid lockup and minimal rotational play when the trigger is depressed, and the trigger return spring is very strong. The one-piece walnut grips are original and in excellent shape, and the gun also has the correct brass grip frame. Inspector stamped "H" on the underside of the trigger guard, which indicates possible military acceptance. A very unique piece of American Civil War History!
