Description
4/15/22 - This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1884 "Trapdoor" Rifle, manufactured in 1892. The model 1884 traces its roots back to the design of the Springfield 1873. The model 1884 incorporated a significant number of improvements that had been made between 1878 and 1879. It also featured a serrated trigger that had been incorporated into the Springfield rifle design in 1883. This one has a rare experimental rod bayonet where the cleaning rod also serves as a bayonet. This one is not one of the original 2,000 made because it is not in the correct serial range, ~320000. So it was part of the later run. This gun is in nice condition. While there isn't a ton of actual finish loss, there is heavy brown patina along the whole barrel and trigger guard, and tang. Spotty oxidation on the lock. The stock has a nice and legible military inspection stamp dated 1892. There is a "8 NY 411" unit marking on the top edge of the butt stock. Two carvings that look like the initials "LL" on the left side of the butt stock. Very nice bore with strong rifling. Comes with a reproduction RIA brown leather sling.Specifications
