Description
10/15/20 - This is a very nice example of a Springfield Model 1884 "Trapdoor" Rifle, manufactured in 1892. The model 1884 traces its roots back to the design of the Springfield 1873. The model 1884 incorporated a significant number of improvements that had been made between 1878 and 1879. It also featured a serrated trigger that had been incorporated into the Springfield rifle design in 1883. This one has a rare experimental rod bayonet where the cleaning rod also serves as a bayonet. This one is not one of the original 2,000 made because it is not in the correct serial range, ~320000. So it was part of the later run. This gun is in very nice condition. it has retained most of its original bluing, but there is muzzle wear and spotty wear along the barrel. Some of the original case-hardening is still visible on the receiver, but there is freckling throughout. The stock has inspectors initials and a "P" proof. The stock is excellent - just a few dings and handling marks. The bore is actually very nice for its age - shiny with strong rifling. There is just minor fouling in the grooves - should clean up really nice.Specifications
