Description
3/25/22 - This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1884 "Trapdoor" Rifle, manufactured in 1892. The model 1884 traces its roots back to the design of the Springfield 1873. The model 1884 incorporated a significant number of improvements that had been made between 1878 and 1879. It also featured a serrated trigger that had been incorporated into the Springfield rifle design in 1883. This one has a rare experimental rod bayonet where the cleaning rod also serves as a bayonet. This one is not one of the original 2,000 made because it is not in the correct serial range, ~320000. So it was part of the later run. This gun is in nice condition. While there isn't a ton of actual finish loss, there is heavy brown patina along the whole barrel, trigger guard, and tang. Heavy spotty oxidation on the breach. There is noticeable discoloration on the side plate and hammer. The stock has a really nice and crisp military inspection stamp dated 1892. There are several rack numbers on both sides of the butt stock. There are small dings and bruises throughout. A few more noticeable gouges here and there. The bore is shiny with strong rifling and some areas of spotty oxidation.Specifications
