Description
4/27/23 - This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1884 "Trapdoor" Rifle, manufactured in 1891. The model 1884 traces its roots back to the design of the Springfield 1873. The model 1884 incorporated a significant number of improvements that had been made between 1878 and 1879. It also featured a serrated trigger that had been incorporated into the Springfield rifle design in 1883. This one has a rare experimental rod bayonet where the cleaning rod also serves as a bayonet. This one is not one of the original 2,000 made because it is not in the correct serial range, ~320000. So it was part of the later run. Overall, the gun is in nice condition. Almost all of the original finish has worn away. There is brown patina and pitting on the butt plate. Areas of spotty brown patina here and there and some tiny dings around the muzzle. Spotty discoloration on the lock. Near-mint bore.Specifications
