Description
6/16/23 - This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1863 Musket, dated 1863 on the lock plate. As evidenced by the "1870" date and US property marking on the breech, this particular rifle was converted to a Model 1868 musket in 1870. This conversion consisted of replacing the percussion lock with the breech-loading trapdoor mechanism, and relining the barrels to convert them from .58 to .50 caliber. Barrel and receiver have matching serial numbers. Three military cartouches on the left side of the stock. Overall, the musket is in fair condition, but there is virtually no finish on the metal parts. There is noticeable spotty oxidation and brown patina throughout and some light surface rust near the muzzle. Very nice wood stock with no major damage, just the usual signs of wear. Comes with an original cleaning rod. The bore is shiny for the most part with strong rifling, but there are some small spots of oxidation here and there.Specifications
