Description
6/6/23 - This is an original Remington-Lee Navy Model 1885 bolt action rifle. This rifle was patented by the same man (James Paris Lee) who is known for the Lee-Enfield rifles made for British use during WW1 and WW2. The model 1885 was not nearly as popular, and was only used by the U.S. Navy from 1885-1892. Despite being a revolutionary design at the time, the US military switched to the Krag M1892 shortly after their first order of these rifles in 1885. The rifle features a 5 round box magazine and adjustable rear sight. The receiver is stamped "U.S.N. No 1256 W.W.K." with an anchor logo. There's also a Remington patent stamp and serial number 50212. The bolt and receiver have matching star shaped acceptance proofs. The metal has traces of original finish, but most of the finish is worn away leaving a steel color underneath. However, there's minimal surface patina and no rust or pitting, making this example in great overall condition for its' age. The wood is excellent with some normal signs of use and aging, but no cracks or notable issues. The bore has nice rifling, but there is some textured areas and pitting within the grooves about 10 inches down from the muzzle of the bore. We rate at 7/10 overall. Mechanically sound and comes with an original clean rod, as shown.Specifications
