Description
2/14/25 - This is an excellent condition vintage USMC Officer's Mameluke sword. The sword comes complete with the original scabbard, leather travel / carry case, and a linen soft case / insert. The sword features excellent "ivoroid" (fake ivory) grip panels that are in great condition with only a hint of yellowing along the edges, but no crack or chips. The sword blade is about 28 inches long with excellent, clean and crisp etchings on each side. The spine of the blade is marked "USMC Serial No 323", and the front 'spine' is marked "Germany". Note that the "Serial No 323" is not a serial number but a reference to the sword meeting acceptable requirements for an Officer to purchase. The blade edge is unsharpened and clean with no signs of tampering. The original blade washer is intact and tight to the hilt. The ricasso is etched with the Hilborn-Hamburger trademark maker marking on one side, and the other side has a 6 pointed star with "PROVED" marked inside the star. A tightly wound black leather portepee is attached to the top of the handle and wrapped around the brass hand guard. The brass has very mild surface patina and traces of verdigris but overall very clean with a slightly aged look. The scabbard has a shiny polished finish with some very minor micro-scratches and light surface wear around the rings / gold gilded fittings, but no major issues (excellent overall). The cloth sleeve and leather case are both in excellent condition as well. Overall a fantastic piece of US history and a high quality German made sword. Overall length (not including scabbard) is just under 38 inches.Specifications
