SOLD - Rare Colt M1903 - Major General Thomas Sherburne

12/28/21 - This is a beautiful example of a Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless that was presented to Major General Thomas Sherburne when he retired from the US military in 1961. Maj Gen Thomas Sherburne served in the 101st Ariborne Division during WW2 and had a very successful military career as an artillery specialist through to the Vietman War. Included with the gun is a write-up of General Sherburne's life and military career. General Sherburne was the recipient of two Army Distinguished Service Medals and a Legion of Merit Award. Also included with the gun are copies of some of the original paperwork tying this gun to Sherburne, such as War Department documents and original sales record that names the pistol by serial. There are also two signed letters that document the chain of ownership of this pistol. The gun comes with an original cardboard box, cleaning rod, owners manual, and one period-correct magazine. The box is hand-numbered to match the gun and has the name "Sherburne" on it. The gun was originally manufactured in 1943, is all matching, has the proper "US Property" marking on the right side of the frame, and has a very faint cross-canon military cartouche on the left side of the frame. It has retained about 99% of its parkerized finish with just hints of wear on some of the high edges. There are very minor scuffs in the finish here and there and a few small dots of oxidation on the top and left side of the slide. Comes with mint wood grips. The bore is stone-mint.
