Description
11/5/26 - For sale is a Civil War U.S. Model 1840 non-commissioned officer's sword made by the Ames Manufacturing Company and dated 1864, with its leather scabbard. The M1840 NCO sword was carried by sergeants of infantry and artillery throughout the Civil War. This example has the cast brass hilt with the ribbed grip, ball pommel, single knuckle bow and oval counterguard, and a straight fullered blade. The ricasso is marked "Made by Ames Mfg Co" on one side and "US / ADK / 1864" on the other for the government inspector and date, and the remnants of the leather blade washer are still in place. The black leather scabbard has its brass throat with the frog stud and the brass drag. The brass hilt has an even mellow patina with light dings, and the blade shows noticeable heavy spotty oxidation along its length, especially near the ricasso. The scabbard leather is solid with surface crazing and wear, and the stitching runs the full length. A good, honest 1864 Ames NCO sword.
