Description
11/3/26 - For sale is an antique solid brass eight-spoke ship's wheel made by Brown Brothers & Co. Ltd. of the Rosebank Ironworks in Edinburgh, Scotland. Brown Brothers was founded in 1863 by engineer Andrew Betts Brown and became one of Britain's best-known makers of ship steering gear, hydraulic machinery and telemotors, later famous for their ship stabilizers. The wheel measures about 18 inches in diameter, and the hub is clearly marked "Brown Bros & Co Ltd / Rosebank Ironworks Edinburgh." It has a keyed center bore, eight tapered brass spokes with turned knobs, and a solid brass rim. It is in very nice condition overall, with honest signs of age and some discoloration here and there. One of the spokes has a piece of blue painter's tape wrapped around it. The spoke is not loose, and we are not sure why the tape was applied. A great piece of Scottish maritime history that displays beautifully.
