Description
11/5/26 - For sale is a Civil War era cast brass two-tongue frame buckle of the type collectors call a "gator" buckle, named for the two pointed tongues that look like teeth. These simple frame buckles are associated with Confederate belts, where they were used in place of the plate buckles issued to Union troops. This example is a rectangular cast frame with a raised border, a center bar, and the two tongues cast in place on the top bar. It has a heavy green and brown patina with ground deposits consistent with a dug relic. The frame and both tongues are intact. A nice example of a classic Southern frame buckle.
