Description
2/18/26- For sale is a very nice handmade Japanese katana from the 1600s or late 1500s. This is an authentic Japanese katana, the most famous of all the "samurai swords". The sword has been evaluated as coming from the 1600s at the latest, although there is the potential that it was made in the late 1500s during the Muromachi historical period. The blade is very clean, with no patina or rust spots. There is no blade chipping but there are small gaps and imperfections in the metal, a sign of very old handcrafting, rather than the perfection of modern industrial steel. The tang has been slightly shortened but there is red paint writing on the tang, potentially a replacement of the maker's mark. There is a nice traditional heat treatment line down the center of the blade. The handle is wood with a ray skin covering and traditional silk wrap with small decorative elements. The ray skin and wood has cracked slightly with age and the previous insertion of a holding pin that was too large for the hole. There are small birds engraved on the handle and they are highlighted with gold. The scabbard is bamboo with a reddish-brown paint. There is a modern cord to tie the sword to the scabbard or to hang the scabbard from clothing. There is a modern cloth wrap bag. Overall in excellent condition.
This sword forms a pair with item 122925-21 - BK.
