Description
7/19/22 - This is a complete Mauser C96 Broomhandle "Red 9" pistol rig from 1916, including harness, cleaning rod and matching numbered stock. Unlike its commercial counterparts, "red 9" broomhandles were chambered in more common 9mm Para caliber, which was used by the german army and were marked with a large 9 on the grips which was then filled with red or orange paint to help German soldiers differentiate its caliber from the standard .30 mauser cartridge. Only about 130,000 of these very collectible guns were made, with only about 100,000 being accepted by the army and issued to the troops. Considered to be a substitute for a light carbine, they became very popular in trench warfare and were used by some of the Germany's elite crack troops. This particular example is fairly early, one of the first ~7,000 issued/produced. It has matching numbers throughout, including the original grips. The bluing shows high edge wear but there isn't a ton of finish loss overall. There is scattered oxidation on most of the pistol though. The bore has strong rifling but some freckling in the grooves. The original stock is included and matches the serial of the pistol. It has a fairly crisp imperial proof, as well. There is a repaired crack along one edge, and the stock was lightly sanded during the repair. The harness is maker marked by Hohmann & Sohn. It's in fairly good condition, though the closure strap for the cleaning rod has torn. It also appears the date on the back was cut out but we have on guess as to why. Otherwise, the loops and straps show cracking but the leather is in fairly good shape beyond that. Comes with an original cleaning rod.Specifications
