Description
11/5/26 - For sale is a named British Royal Navy Pattern 1827 officer's sword retailed by Gieves, with its scabbard and sword knot. The Pattern 1827 has served as the Royal Navy officer's sword from the reign of George IV to the present day. This example has the gilt brass hilt with the lion head pommel and backstrap, a white ray skin grip bound with gilt wire, and the half-basket guard pierced with the crowned fouled anchor badge and crowned royal cipher. The folding guard on the reverse locks the sword into the scabbard and is engraved "J.K. Spann R.N." for the officer who carried it. The straight fullered blade is etched along its length with foliage, crowns and fouled anchors, and the ricasso is marked "GIEVES". The black leather scabbard has three gilt brass mounts with two hanging rings, and the gold and black sword knot is attached. The gilt on the hilt is bright with light wear, the grip and wire are tight, and the blade etching is crisp with some light gray spotting toward the tip. The scabbard leather is solid with a mottled finish and light surface wear. A nice named Royal Navy officer's sword.
