Description

8/30/24 - This is a good example of a WW1 Ersatz Bayonet. These bayonets were made during the early years of WW1 in Germany. Ersatz (Substitute) bayonets were made because there were not enough of the standard issue bayonets for the influx of German soldiers needed for the war effort. This bayonet, given its age, is in good condition, the blade on this piece has no oxidation. The edge of the bayonet does appear to have been sharpened at one point and there is the smallest edge chip roughly half way up the blade. The makers marks above the ricasso and spine are strong and easily legible. This bayonet is also serial stamped "4014". The bayonet mounting ring on these pieces were purposely split. Unfortunately, one of the wings for the bayonet ring has snapped off. The split on the mount was so that it could fit both the Gewehr 98 and the Gewehr 88 rifle. The blade also has a slight bend in it. However, this does not affect the function of the bayonet with the scabbard. The scabbard has a few small dents and nicks , but nothing that is effecting its functionality.
