SOLD - BYF 44 Mauser P.38 - First Variation, Transitional

5/9/25 - This is a rare example of a first variation transitional byf 44 P.38 pistol, manufactured by Mauser in early 1944. This variation is characterized by the continued use of E/135 Waffenamt acceptance stamps on all parts, even after the calendar year had changed. It represents the earliest 1944 production, assembled and proofed just before Mauser’s switchover to the E/WaA135 marking system. As such, these pistols closely resemble late byf 43 examples and provide collectors with valuable insight into the transitional phases of Mauser's wartime production practices. With factory records lost or destroyed during the war, identifying and cataloging these subtle shifts helps define critical change points in P.38 development. Estimated production for this first transitional byf 44 variation is very few, making it especially desirable to advanced collectors. This one is all matching and has retained about 95% of its original bluing. There is just very minor high edge wear, muzzle wear, and very minor thinning on the front strap. Fitted with brown bakelite grips and comes with an Eagle 359 marked Walther magazine. The bore is mostly shiny with strong rifling, but there is some light surface oxidation here and there. De-cocker is functional.
