Description
12/23/24 - This is an extremely early Colt Pocket Model of 1848, commonly referred to as the "Baby Dragoon". Featuring a 4" barrel, this example is serial numbered 2506, making it one of the earliest examples, distinguishable by the perfectly round cylinder stops. Later variations transitioned to oval and eventually to square stops. It is all matching, including the barrel, barrel wedge, frame, trigger assembly, butt, and cylinder. This revolver is in very nice condition for its 176-year age, with crisp markings, and about 10% visibility on the roll-engraved "Ranger & Indian Fight Scene". The metal shows no original finish, but exhibits oxidation and wear throughout the frame and barrel consistent with its historical use. Silver brass plating on the trigger assembly and backstrap is thinning and worn in areas, but is ~85-90% retained. Excellent timing, and tight lockup. The bore still has visible rifling, but is dark and pitted throughout. This piece is significant to Colt's evolution, with this early-production Baby Dragoon eventually becoming the basis for the legendary M1849 Pocket Model. Antique, so no licensing is required.
